Super Saturday for Discipleship - Reaching Across Generations

Friday August 21-Saturday August 22, 2009

St. Andrews Presbyterian Church, Dunedin, Florida

Registration is now open for Super Saturday for Discipleship! Formerly Super Saturday for Christian Education, this annual training event is for Educators, Pastors, Elders, Teachers, Youth Leaders - anyone involved in the Educational Ministry of their church.  Our event begins on Friday with a lunch gathering of Church professionals (educators, pastors, youth leaders) with our Keynote speaker, Anne Wilson.  On Saturday all will gather for worship, keynote, workshops and wonderful fellowship.  Registration brochures have been emailed to all churches and are also available in hard copy from the Presbytery office. You can download and print a brochure here.  You will also need the registration form. Contact This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it with questions about registration.  Workshop offerings include training for teachers, curriculum options, Q & A about youth ministry and culture;  young adult ministry, mission with children and much, much more!

annewilson.jpgWe will welcome Anne Wilson who has been a member of the staff at Northwoods Presbyterian Church in Houston, TX since May of 2000.  As Director of Ministries to Children and their Families she has responsibility for the overall educational ministry for infants through fifth grade.  Under Anne’s leadership, rotating workshops have been successfully implemented for the elementary church school program.  Celebrating family milestone events is something the whole congregation enjoys.

Connection to the larger church is very important to Anne. She frequently teaches at presbytery and national conferences and is a past president of the South Central Association of Presbyterian Church Educators. She has also directed and taught at various conferences at Montreat.  Anne has served on the Committee on Ministry and has chaired the planning team for the presbytery leadership conference for the past two years.

Anne was born in Iowa and grew up in Pennsylvania and Maryland.  She received her BA in math from the College of Wooster where she just completed her term as an Alumni Trustee.  Anne and her husband Butch have been Houston residents since 1973.  Anne has taught middle school math in both public and private schools. She has also served on the staff of two other Presbyterian churches in Houston.   The accomplishment they are most proud of is raising their two children, Meredith and Michael.  Ministry to family is both a personal and professional priority.

During our Super Saturday event, Anne will help us understand why and how to include all generations learning and growing together in faith.  Helping families understand their primary role as faith educators is a key emphasis as well.  Come be inspired, gain great new ideas and refresh yourself with the people of God!

Save the Dates!

To:     Members and Friends of the Presbytery of Tampa Bay
From:    Gerry Tyer, Executive Presbyter
Date:    June 9, 2009

I'm writing today with good news concerning the finances of the Presbytery. As you know, at the May 28th meeting, the Presbytery voted to balance the 2009 budget by making significant cuts in personnel and support of key mission projects. At the meeting, representatives from the seventy-five churches were urged to talk with their sessions back home about the essential services and missions that were impacted by the cuts.

Since the presbytery meeting, we have received over $77,000 in response to this call for greater investment in the services and mission of the presbytery. Here are the details:

Giving from Congregations

• Hope Presbyterian Church of Winter Haven made an undesignated pledge of $25,000 to the work and mission of the presbytery.
• First Presbyterian Church of Ft. Meade made an undesignated pledge of $1,200 and has fully paid their per capita for 2009.
• Village Presbyterian Church of Tampa has pledged $2,000 for Beth-El Farmworkers and $2,000 for Cedarkirk Camp plus $10,000 for General Assembly missionaries • Bel Mar Presbyterian Church of Tampa will fully pay their 2009 per capita of $1,038 • First Presbyterian Church of Dade City will add $6,000 to their undesignated pledge • Westminister Presbyterian Church of St. Petersburg will add $5,000 to their undesignated pledge and Garden Crest has pledged an additional $4000.  We have also received an additional $3,000 from the Korean Presbyterian Church of Pinellas Park, and an additional pledge for $5,500 from Tims Memorial Presbyterian Church of Lutz.  May the generosity of Presbyterians continue to flow in praise of Jesus Christ!

Giving from Individuals

In addition to contributions from churches, we have been received over $800 from individuals: Reg Dickey, Doris Guenther, Martha and Betts Huntley, Jim Manor, Evelyn McMullen, Alan Pickering, Mr. & Mrs. Raymond Gibson, Mr. & Mrs. Russell Hachett, and Gerry Tyer.

Special Campaign for Beth-El Farmworkers and Cedarkirk Camp

At the last presbytery meeting, we also voted to conduct a campaign to restore the funds cut from the budgets of Beth-El and Cedarkirk. Soon you will be receiving details about the launching of this campaign. But don't wait! You can send your contributions now. Please make checks payable to 'Presbytery of Tampa Bay' and indicate that you want the funds to go to the 'Special Campaign for Beth-El and Cedarkirk.' Please remember, these gifts go to new funds beyond the pledges already made to the presbytery (not re-directed funds).

Thank You!!!!!

I want to take this opportunity to thank the churches and individuals who have started this tidal wave of generosity. Together as a presbytery we are strong. United we can be effective partners in Christ's mission to the world. If your church has not joined this movement of generosity, now is the time. Please send your written pledge commitment, increased pledge, or your check to the presbytery office.

Feeding of the Five Thousand

I think about the story of the feeding of the five thousand. You recall that the size of the crowd was a surprise to the disciples. When evening came, the need for food seemed overwhelming to them. Today the needs we face seem overwhelming. Back then, Jesus was unruffled. The disciples implored him to send the people home because they were in a wilderness with nary a McDonalds in sight. We have the same feeling today - some disciples can't see the source which will fulfill our current needs.

Jesus said to the disciples, "You feed them." I can just imagine the disciples' eyes rolling at the suggestion. Then a miracle happened. When the disciples returned from scouting out the crowd, they had just five loaves and two fish. Jesus offered a prayer. And behold, everyone was fed with twelve baskets of food left over.

I like Scottish theologian and biblical scholar William Barkley's interpretation of the event. He says there are two explanations. First, he calls it the miracle of the multiplication of the loaves and fish, a supernatural miracle performed by Christ to demonstrate the compassion and power of God.

I am intrigued by Barkley's second interpretation. He calls it the miracle of changing self-oriented people into generous people. He suggests that the vast majority of the crowd would not set out into that wilderness with no food at all. When it was time for dinner, few of them were willing to share what they had. Rather than share their scanty provisions, they kept them for themselves. Then Jesus shared a prayer, a blessing and a smile. Soon others were sharing until there was more than enough for all. It was a miracle of the birth of compassion in grudging hearts.

When we find ourselves in a financial wilderness today, it is natural to be cautious, to take care of ourselves first, and to keep a tight hold on the scarce resources God has given to us. Perhaps Matthew 14 can teach us that even in the midst of scarcity, if we share what little we have, everyone will be fed, and there will be more than enough for all of us today - especially those who are in greatest need.

Does your congregation have a Parish Nurse? On Thursday July 16 from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. Judy Gammonley will present "Parish Nursing for Congregations.  We will gather at the Kelly Road Mission Center and learn about the ministry of Parish Nurses and how they can enhance the spiritual life of your congregation as they help people identify and deal with their physical health needs.  Discussion will center around the role of the Parish Nurse in  providing a congregational health ministry.  Judy is the Parish Nurse at the Presbyterian Church of Palm Harbor.  All congregations are invited to send interested persons to this free event.  All Parish Nurses are also welcome to attend for networking and support.

Each week your Presbytery Staff prays for our churches, their staff, our General Assembly, for those celebrating birthdays in the coming week, and anyone who has asked for prayer. Each month we will share with you the churches we are praying for and invite you to join this ministry of prayer for each other.  During June our churches were:

Northwest Presbyterian Church - St. Petersburg
Pasadena Presbyterian Church - St. Petersburg
Trinity Presbyterian Church - St. Petersburg
Vietnamese Church of Emmanuel - Pinellas Park
Westminster Presbyterian Church - St. Petersburgcelie1.jpg
Woodlawn Presbyterian Church - St. Petersburg

It was a wonderful time of celebration at First Presbyterian Church in Lakeland on June 14.  That afternoon the Presbytery of Tampa Bay ordained Cecelia M. Moore to the ministry of Word and Sacrament.  She was also installed as the Associate Pastor for Christian Education there at FPC.  Cecelia's husband John (pictured with her during the reception) and grandchildren participated in the service, which was a special time of worship and celebration.  Cecelia is a Certified Christian Educator who heard the call to the ministry of Word and Sacrament and we are pleased to have had the opportunity to share in her special day.

Cedarkirk.jpgWHAT ARE YOU DOING THIS SUMMER?
Summer is here and camp is going strong!   You can still be part of the fun!  Camp programs offer a variety of activities and adventures: swimming, archery, canoeing, kayaking, large-group games, high ropes, climbing the rock wall, camping, and forging new friendships.  Not to be overlooked are the Christian education and worship activities where young people are encouraged to grow in their faith.  There is still time to register for a summer that your child will always remember - so many lives have been enriched or changed by the camp experience.  Camp brochures are available in the church office or online at www.cedarkirk.com.  Online registration is fast, easy, and gives you instant confirmation that your child is registered for the session of camp you selected.  We look forward to seeing you this summer!

Duck Alert! We seem to have attracted the attention of a pair of ducks, who may be nesting in the bushes in front of our office.  Since they are very close to our driveway, please be careful when you come to the Presbytery office.  We aren't sure what will happen, but we want to protect the ducks.  Especially in the mornings they seem to enjoy just sitting in the middle of our parking lot.   So when you come to visit us, please be alert for our feathered friends!

Important surveys were handed out at our recent meeting of Presbytery.  Those not picked up have been mailed to churches.  Your Senior Adult Ministry Team urges you to make as many copies as you need, distribute them and return to the Presbytery office by August 1.  There are two surveys - one for the pastor/staff and one for your senior adults.  Please distribute them to as wide an audience (of senior adults) as you can.  The needs of the newly retired are different than the needs of those in their 80's or 90's, and we need to know.  If you have any questions, please contact me by This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Amy Wilson-Stayton, of Seffner Presbyterian Church, Seffner, FL, has been selected by the General Assembly Council to serve in mission on behalf of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).  She will be serving with the International Young Adult Volunteer program in the nation of Northern Ireland during 2009-2010.  Amy is the daughter of the Rev. Claude and Rev. Margaret Wilson-Stayton.
The International Young Adult Volunteer Program offers opportunities in Christian service and learning for young adults (21 to 30 years of age) in five sites around the world.  The job descriptions for the volunteers depend both on the needs of the partner and the skills of the Young Adult Volunteer.  In each placement, the volunteer works with a church or organization, develops Christian community, and meets regularly for prayer and Bible study with other Young Adult Volunteers.

Amy recently attended the Placement Event held at Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary.  There volunteers had the opportunity to discern their placement in a community that included other volunteers, international site coordinators and the Young Adult Volunteer Program staff.

Funding for their time serving internationally is shared by the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), the Young Adult Volunteer, supporting congregation(s) and presbyteries, as well as family and friends.  The appointment as a Young Adult Volunteer is considered a full-time position, and volunteers do not secure other employment while they are serving overseas.  They receive a small stipend to cover basic living expenses in the country where they will live and work.  With the approval of the General Assembly Council, mission workers are asked to help raise funds to offset the costs of supporting them while they are in mission.

Any way that you can support and encourage Amy during her year of service will be warmly welcomed.  If you have questions or need additional information, please contact Shannon Langley at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Yes we have coffee! But Fair Trade is about so much more!.  Our purpose is to raise awareness of fair trade issues and how coffee_2939c.jpgcongregations can make a real difference in the lives of people around the world.  Purchasing fair trade items guarantees a certain level of income to the farmers and artisans from whom we purchase.

For instance, when we buy coffee or other items from Equal Exchange, the farmers who grew the coffee beans (all shade grown) receive a minimum per pound price, no matter what the world coffee market does.  There are no middle 'men' or steps in fair trade.  Farmers are part of cooperatives that deal directly with Equal Exchange, thus ensuring more money going to the hard working individuals who produced the product.  We invite you to sample what we sell, see the items from SERVV and learn more about how easy it is for congregations to participate in fair trade projects!  And we are willing to come make presentations to your Mission Committees, sessions - anyone who wants to learn more about how to make a positive impact purchasing items we use every day.  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
