Administrative Personnel Association (APA) What have you done for your support staff lately???? When thinking about your congregation’s many assets, often there is a very valuable asset that is overlooked and does not make the list. This asset can be called by different names but without this asset, things would not run as smoothly as they do in an office. Ask any pastor or synod/presbytery leader who does not have one. Did you guess that it is your support staff -- church secretary, office assistant, administrative assistant, office administrator -- the title does not matter. Your church building is also one of your congregation’s assets and it most likely topped your list. This asset demands a lot of attention -- cleaning the gutters, painting, new carpeting, and a myriad of other maintenance issues. It seems like the building is always having to have something done to keep it up-to-date. So, what have you done for your support staff recently? What kind of attention have you given them to keep them current and up to date? Did you know that there is an organization that is just for them and helps your support staff to be knowledgeable and informed? The Administrative Personnel Association (APA) is a professional organization of the Presbyterian Church (USA), established in 1976, for administrative support staff in churches, governing bodies, agencies and related institutions. APA is comprised of support staff across the country who feel called by God to serve the church. Its mission is to provide professional development and personal growth opportunities through continuing education for certification through regional and national conferences and workshops. There are three levels of certification with a total of 135 hours of instruction recognized by the Division of National Ministries of the PC(USA). As part of the certification process, some of the core courses offered are: Theology, Polity, Church History, Spiritual Growth & Discipline, Directory for Worship, as well as courses in church administration, technology and finances. The many benefits of becoming a member of APA are not only for your support staff, but for everyone they serve as well. All certified APA members are listed in the Directory of the General Assembly and, according to the Book of Order, have voice on the floor of their respective presbytery. As well as opportunities for education, support and growth for its members, APA offers valuable networking with other support staff members across the nation in ten regions. The Florida region has over 60 active members. Our regional annual conference is usually held in May. There is also a National Conference hosted by regions on a rotation each year in July. Please visit APA’s web site www.pcusa-apa.org for more information on membership, its benefits and certification process. So the question is asked again: "What have you done for your support staff lately?"
