Here’s an overview of Upcoming Continuing Education Events offered through the Leadership Institute of Union Presbyterian Seminary throughout this fall. We hope you can join us for one or more of these exciting opportunities, whether on campus or online.
The Leadership Institute is committed to equipping and inspiring church and ministry leaders. Our desire is to foster the continuing, ongoing process of leadership development for pastors, educators, and lay leaders alike. We invite you to explore how we may partner together to strengthen our witness and service to the church in the world. We believe, here, you will find community and challenge in an active and engaging learning environment.
COME TO CAMPUS

Dates: Thursdays, September 13, 2018 – May 23, 2019 (check schedule for specific course dates)
Location: Union Presbyterian Seminary — Charlotte campus
Led by: a variety of seasoned professionals & experienced practitioners in church business administration
Cost: Dependent upon number of seminars selected
Note: Open to anyone and will meet the core course requirements for certification through The Church Network (TCN). Individuals can register for one, some, or all seminars offered per semester or year.The Carl Howie Center Event (Richmond)
“It’s Showtime! Art, Organizing, and Building Community One Musical at a Time”
The Carl Howie Center for Science, Art, and Theology sponsors presentations through which church leaders and community members recognize and engage the insights and implications of the interplay of science, art, and theology for theological expression and the practice of ministry
Date: Thursday, October 4, 2018
Schedule Overview: Complimentary Lunch, Afternoon Seminar & Conversation, Evening Workshop
Location: Union Presbyterian Seminary — Richmond campus
Led by: Burns Stanfield, Pastor, Fourth Presbyterian, South Boston, VA
Cost: FREE, and open to the public, including a complimentary lunch (registration required for lunch only)Visions of Strategic Planning – Navigating the Way from Mission to Impact (Charlotte)
Dates: October 23 – 24, 2018
Location: Union Presbyterian Seminary — Charlotte campus
Led by: Dr. Ken McFayden, Academic Dean of the Richmond campus and Professor of Ministry and Leadership Development
Cost: $195, includes lunch on both days (if register by September 17, cost is $150)
Note: This workshop is open to anyone and does qualify for 1.3 CEUs for those seeking certification as a church administrator through The Church Network (TCN).Interim/Transitional Ministry Education (Richmond)
Dates: November 12 – 16, 2018
Location: Union Presbyterian Seminary — Richmond campus
Led by: a team of knowledgeable professionals in transitional leadership practices and theory
Cost: $395, includes lunch on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday
Note: This class is limited to 30 registrants and typically reaches capacity, so register early!
ONLINE COURSES

Course: Religious Education Theory and Practice
Dates: September 4 – October 3, 2018 (at home and online), with October 1 – 3, 2018, scheduled for on campus learning in Richmond
Location: On campus portion at Union Presbyterian Seminary — Richmond campus
Led by: Dr. Cindy Kissel-Ito, Associate Professor of Christian Education and Director of the Master of Arts in Christian Education Program at Union Presbyterian Seminary
Cost: $295, for both at home and on-campus learning
Note: This hybrid course meets the requirements for Christian Educator certification in the PC(USA), but is open to anyone who would like to learn more. Additional courses will be held in early 2019.
Online Courses: Pathways to Learning and Leadership
Dates: September 6 – November 20, 2018 (check schedule below for specific course dates)
Location: Wherever you and your computer go (internet connection required)
Led by: Various faculty members and friends of Union Presbyterian Seminary
Cost: $ 100 for each five-week course
Note: These courses offer an excellent, affordable way to learn from and engage with theological and biblical scholars from the comfort of home (or wherever your computer may be), while interacting with fellow participants as well.All courses are online and are tailor-made for church members, pastors, educators, those preparing to become Commissioned Ruling Elders/Commissioned Pastors, and anyone else who is interested in learning more. Here’s the fall line-up:
- September 6 – October 4: Worship and Sacraments – led by Dr. Rebecca Davis, Associate Professor of Christian Education (Thursdays)
- September 11 – October 9: Biblical Interpretation – led by Dr. Carson Brisson, Associate Professor of Bible and Biblical Languages (Tuesdays)
- October 18 – November 15: Polity and Administration – led by Rev. Carson Rhyne, General Presbyter/Stated Clerk, Presbytery of the James (Thursdays)
- October 23 – November 20: Reformed Theology/Church History – led by Dr. Paul Galbreath, Professor of Theology (Tuesdays)
